| FINASTERIDE
1. How does it work? Why is it useful for androgenetic
alopecia?
Finasteride inhibits the enzyme called five alpha reductase
type two that intervenes in the formation of the hormone
DHT. Therefore, it diminishes the level of this hormone
in the blood, interrupting a key factor in the development
of androgenetic baldness.
2. How is it used? What is the dosage?
It is administered by ingesting one 1-mg pill per day,
at any time of day.
3. What are the success rates for this treatment?
After 12 months, 65% of men treated with finasteride
have had positive effects and after 24 months, the rate
increases to 84% according to statistics presented at
scientific conferences and in publications.
4. How long should it be used?
After two or three months of use, you will begin to
see the first results of reduced hair loss and after
six months, the results improve even more at which point
you will note improved thickness in the hair. Concretely,
the results will continue to improve with extended use
for over two years. If after one year of treatment you
have not observed any positive result you should consider
whether or not you wish to continue the treatment. Continuous
use is necessary to maintain and improve the results
obtained. If the treatment is interrupted, the hair
that has improved will probably fall out gradually over
six to twelve months.
5. What are the side effects?
The chances of having side effects produced by finasteride
are low and are near nil with extended use. Of the patients
tested, 1.8% have had reduced sex drive, 1.3% have had
erection dysfunctions, and 1.2% have had ejaculation
disorders (0.8% reduced ejaculation). Of the patients'
side effects, 58% have disappeared with continued use
of the treatment and 100% when they stopped the treatment.
6. In what cases should it not be used?
Women who are planning a pregnancy or who are pregnant
should not use it. Finasteride could cause abnormalities
in the development of external genitals in the male
fetus. It should also not be used by persons with allergies
to any of the ingredients in the medication.
7. Is it efficient in women?
Very seldom. Generally, it is efficient in 30% of women
and in particular in women who have problems with ovarian
cysts.
